General Discussion / Re: What do you learn with Stackz?

Try this for increasing your English vocabulary and using STACKZ. http://www.freerice.com/
For every correct answer they will give 20 grains of rice to hungry people around the world.
As of today I'm at level 50, have collected 297 words for my STACKZ and earned over 20,000 grains of rice. Let's see...Would that be a cupful?

Word of Day Spanish and English:

I enter the word of day plus the accompanying sample sentence etc. spread over all 4 sides of 'Stackz'.
I start with a pre-numbered '1 to 100'.szm file, overwriting 1 number for each daily entry.
To make a pre-numbered file, enter x in a column 100 times in Microsoft word; hi-lite the column and number it with "format">bullets and numbering.
Copy and paste the numbered column to "wordpad"; the numbering will move along with the X'es.
Use 'wordpad' edit replace to remove the periods and X'es. [hi-lite from . to x and copy and paste this into 'find what']
Use 'List wizard' to create the '1 to 100 .szm' file, naming the language, use 1 token only.

Yes, only about 20 words are visible on the screen at any one time. To see all 100, set Maximum local elements to 100, select 'Initialize local stack directly' then 'Detailed local stack', use the scroll bar to see all. In 'Match dialog' it will automatically scroll to find a match.

English Vocabulary:
I have just finished creating a word list of "Merriam-Webster Vocabulary Builder". The paper back. 1000 words with word roots. About 65 hours of scanning and editing. Like Master Card says; "priceless".

My wordlist size:
I chose a size of around 1000 words with 10 lessons of 100 words each.
I set the Maximum Local Stack Elements at 100.
In 'learn dialog' I can see all of the words in a lesson on the left side of screen.
I have downloaded some very large word lists of 25000 or more and then cut them down to 1000. That is 25 word lists of 1000 words each.
To cut a 10000 word list I open a 'working' folder and fill it with empty files like this:
word list 1.smz
word list 2.smz
word list 3.smz
word list 4.smz
word list 5.smz
word list 6.smz
word list 7.smz
word list 8.smz
word list 9.smz
word list 10.smz
TOP-HALF.smz
BOTTEM-HALF.smz
...............................
I save the big file to be cut to both the 'top half'.smz and to the 'bottom half'.smz, then start deleting, watching the the word counter.
In top half, start deleting at the bottom. In bottem half, start deleting at the top. The remaining 5000 from top half are saved to word lists 5 and 4. the remaining 5000 from bottom half are saved to word lists 10 and 9.
Continue deleting from word lists 5-4-10-9 etc. saving to the next word list.
Use the same procedure to reduce 1000 to 100.

Hi,
I have been wondering why the tab key is disabled or not supported on 'List Import Wizard page'; since the default token separator is the Tab.
Occasionally I need to insert a tab while in 'List Import Wizard' and its not available. This is only a minor drawback and I work around it by pasting a 'patch' when needed.

Sir: Your suggestion to recover by renaming the last opened file, works. I have modified my previous post on this condition.

Bugs fixed / Opening file with undefined language
October 15, 2007, 09:51:24 PM
ALERT: a potential crash condition.
If a "deck" file is opened that has a language that has
not been listed in--[options>stackz options>languages],
'STACKZ' will crash and continue to crash.
[My previous post here modified 26oct2007] To recover, try to delete/rename the last opened file so that it can't be loaded automatically at startup. After the next start-up of 'STACKZ', 1st step, list all languages that you will be working with in--[options>stackz options>languages]. If you don't know what was the last file loaded, the file will show in 'Task Manager'.
I experienced this while upgradeing to Version 07 RC 6 Standard Edition.

Otherwise, 'STACKZ' is a pleasure to use.

Thanks for all the improvements.

Sir:
Subject: unfulfilled request, failure to remember settings.

Someone previously noted that the 'Maximum Local Stack Elements setting' in the 'learn Dialog' function does not remember a setting and must be reset each new time STACKZ is used.

I use STACKZ to collect 'word for the day' from various sources in different languages.[about.com]
I preload 100 empty numbered elements to a lesson and then add the
new words one by one daily. To access all of the elements I have to reset to 100 each new time used.
Teaching STACKZ to remember settings would be an excellent improvement to an already great product.

There may be a bug: ver 5a

When in the "edit entire file" mode there may be a problem with "delete function" or the "save" function.
When deletions are made at random or from top down or bottom up and the the file is "saved", a line becomes "high lighted".  Sometimes upon the next deletion the "encountered a problem and must close" warning shows and the program shuts down.
I can avoid the shut down by "pre-empting", that is, by immeadiately closing "edit" when the blue line appears and re-starting "edit" if more deletions are wanted.
No apparent damage is done by the unwanted shutdown except the previously deletions may not saved.
I have experienced this behavior on several different deck files so far.

Stackz - New Feature Requests / Sound
July 04, 2007, 11:37:03 AM
Hi,
An integrated audio file system is where the audio file selected for a card  becomes a part of the individual card file and stays with the card even when the card is moved, copied or e-mailed. The linked audio file is where only the physical location of the audio file is known to the card. If the audio file location is moved or the file lost, the link is broken.

Stackz - New Feature Requests / Re: New features
July 03, 2007, 03:52:54 PM
gigapops's wish list for "new improved stackz":
1. Integrated audio file option as found in "b4uki" (before you know it), not the linked kind as in "V-train".
2. Slide show option as in "V-Train", with timer control.
3. In the edit dialog I'd like to have a select "all" button to aid in copying/moving contents.

comment:

At present "Stackz" is great. You can you make it "insanely great"?
