Stackz - New Feature Requests / Track failures
October 09, 2007, 01:33:49 AM
The website "Reviewing the Kanji" has a very cool feature:

You can Test your cards as long as you want, and naturally you'll fail some and pass some.  The cool thing is, when you quit, you get a screen that shows you all of the cards that you missed, so you can review them.  It would be cool if this would be implemented in Stackz.

It would essentially require tracking of your failures during a given test.  At the end of the test, you could choose to automatically highlight those missed cards for Learning.

When the number of cards in your Stack grows so large (my vocabulary now passes 6000) a cool feedback system like this would be invaluable.

Thanks!

I try for 30 words a day, 4 times a week.  Each day, I review the words I've learned new in the past 4 days, then on Friday I do a full review of my whole list.  My Japanese vocabulary is at about 3500 right now, and I'm hoping to get up to about 5000-6000 by December so I can pass the JLPT level 2.

I tried about 50 a day before, but my brain just couldn't handle it, so I had to step down to 30.

Hi, I'm still on RC2 but according to your notes for RC3 (4) it seems like this hasn't been mentioned yet.  Apologies if it has.

To re-create the bug, enter edit mode and edit a stack.  Then, bring up the search bar.  Type a long word in the search box.  An example is カルチャーショック.  This word is actually longer than the search entry box, and when you press "enter" to choose your selection in the IME, no text is entered!  If you search for a word that is shorter than the search entry box, like カルチャー, there is no problem.

Any time the entry (prior to conversion) is longer than the search box and it needs to go to a second line, pressing "enter" causes the text to go away.

Is that clear or should I elaborate more?

Thanks!

Try pressing the enter button more than once to search... this normally clears it up for me.

Hi,

I really find the new Example Sentence feature to be great!  I have some suggestions on expanding its functionality.

Copy - It would be cool to copy an example sentence to the clipboard to paste it somewhere else.

Add to selectedstack - In addition to my "Vocab" and "Characters" Stackz files, I have a "Grammar" file which is Japanese - English.  It contains all of the sentence pairs I've found in practice tests, textbooks, etc.  It would be great to be able to copy example sentences directly in here, like you can with words in the dictionary.

Thanks!

Looking forward to it.  This will be really useful!   ;D

I had this problem today.  I saw 行先 on a sign and wanted to search for it.  I know 行動 and 先に but I didn't know the reading of 行先, so I wanted to type in each individually.  This is a pain because it searches after each entry.

Stackz - New Feature Requests / Re: New features
July 12, 2007, 06:05:19 PM
I already posted this before, but it was in "bug reports" and may have been overlooked as a feature request.

I'd like the dictionary search to be slightly more flexible.  Right now it's great, but sometimes you can't find what you're looking for, especially when searching for multiple word entries in English.
(PS, I did rebuild my index as suggested, and that fixed some problems, but these problems persist...)

Example:

Say I want to look up "same day"
The target word is 同日 [どうじつ] the same day

However, when I type in the search box "same day," there are no words found.

I have to type in exactly "the same day."  Then I get two search results:
同日 [どうじつ] the same day
ダブる [ダブる] to coincide (fall on the same day); to have two of something; to repeat a school year after failing

Note that in neither of these cases is this entry found:
その日 [そのひ] that day; the very same day

In order to find that, I have to type in exactly "the very same day."

It seems to me that when I type in "same day" I should get all three results:
同日 [どうじつ] the same day
ダブる [ダブる] to coincide (fall on the same day); to have two of something; to repeat a school year after failing
その日 [そのひ] that day; the very same day

I'm sure there's plenty of other definitions containing the words "same day" that I'm missing out on because I didn't type in the definition exactly as it's listed.

In the same vein, I should be able to type in "day same" and get the same results.  In other words, each word in the search box should be treated individually, and the dictionary should search for entries containing all of the individual words.

In this way it will function like a search engine on the internet.

I hope this suggestion is easy to implement.  I use Stackz as my primary dictionary for my Japanese studies!!!   ;D

Thanks I just tried out this feature and it works great.

Well I still use Stackz as my primary learning tool.  I import my lists of already learned entries into KanjiGold and then run it in the background at work.  I glance at it every so often, and it reinforces what I know, and reminds me of what I don't know.  Since it shows you question and answer at the same time, you're not really testing yourself, just refreshing your memory.  So Stackz and KanjiGold are very different in that regard.

Yes, I re-generated the indecies and it seemed to work.  Not sure why they were messed up before.  I seem to remember re-generating on Beta 1, but I don't recall.  Maybe not.  Sorry, I wish I knew more!

Thanks for the tip!  :D

WOAH!  :o

Well, that saved the day.  Searches that used to turn up just one result are now showing tens or hundreds.  THANKS!  ;D

Bugs fixed / Better dictionary search functionality
June 19, 2007, 11:06:34 PM
Sorry if this has been mentioned before.

I'd like to see some improvement in the dictionary search algorithm.  There are many situations in which it is very difficult to find what you are looking for.  Here are some examples of changes I'd like to see:

(1)  English multi-word search

Let's say I'm looking for 暗記する, which means "to learn by heart."  Here's the EDICT definition:
暗記   あんき   memorization; memorisation; learning by heart

To search for this entry, I type in "learn."  No luck.
Next is "learning."  Nope.
"Learn heart"
"Learning heart"
"Learn by heart"
"Learning by heart"

None of these searches give me the word I'm looking for, even why I type in the definition EXACTLY.
So, something needs to change there.  In my opinion, the definition should appear after any of those searches.

(2)  English single-word search, multi-word definition

Let's say I want to search for "Tank," taking the meaning of military vehicle.  Here is the EDICT definition:
戦車   せんしゃ   tank (military vehicle)

Currently there is NO WAY to search for this word.  First I search for Tank and get this:
タンク   タンク   tank
槽   そう   (1) cistern; bath; tank; chamber; (2) bunker (coal); (3) cell (electrical); (4) vessel

Then I type "Military," guessing it might help, and get this:
軍事的   ぐんじてき   military
軍事上   ぐんじじょう   military; strategic

Then "vehicle":
ビークル   ビークル   vehicle
媒介物   ばいかいぶつ   medium; agency; carrier; vehicle
乗り物   のりもの   vehicle
乗物   のりもの   vehicle
車   くるま   car; vehicle; wheel

So, I can't find tank.  Even if I search for "tank (military vehicle)," which is the exact definition.

Stackz doesn't find it because it seems to only look at the full definition - tank (military vehicle) - and doesn't look at its parts.  So, if the algorithm could be changed to look at all words in the definition, I would be able to find it by searching for "tank," "military," OR "vehicle."  Or, if the multi-word search was implemented as describe above in (1), i could search for "tank military" or "tank vehicle" to find it.

(3)  Wildcards

This one's easy.  If I type in * hand, I want to find all words that end with hand.
Left hand, Right hand, underhand... etc.
If I search for 日, I only get one definition... but I'd like to type in *日 for all words ending in *日, or 日* for all words starting with 日, or *日* for all words containing 日.

Note that wildcards would solve the problem above...
In (1) I could search for *heart or learn* or *heart* or *learn*.  This would give me a lot of definitions to read through, like heart attack, heartache, learning, etc.  But at least I'd find what I was looking for.
In (2) I could type in *tank* and get anything from tanker to gas tank.

Hope you like these suggestions.
