Overview / Free trial versions: download simplified
June 09, 2025, 07:11:52 AM
To ensures automatic and smooth distribution of updates without user intervention, the Stackz Windows apps are distributed via Microsoft store. They can be directly purchased at the store, or also unlocked with a license purchased at the Stackz website at a slightly lower cost.

There are also free one-month trial versions of Stackz Standard and Dictionary editions available at the Microsoft store with the full feature set. However, free trials only appear in the Windows app of the Microsoft store, but not in the web version of the store. Since only the web version can be embedded in the Stackz website, the free trial versions were hard to discover up to now.

With the latest change of the product download process, trials versions are much easier to access. Right above the embedded Microsoft store Stackz product page (which does not show the free trial download button), a link allows opening the same product page in the store-app (which will show the free trial button) with one click.

Please check this out and let us know your experience!

iStackz (Stackz for iOS) / iPhone development status
January 15, 2010, 08:30:40 AM
This is just a short status about the "Stackz for iPhone" development.

Development progress is quite slow due to lack of time, but we are more and more convinced that iStackz will be great!

At the moment, we can copy Stackz files from the mac to the iPhone and view the content there - in fact copying the files was quite a challenge with the iPhone platform! Adding the real Stackz features will be less tricky from a technical point of view, but finding the right balance of useable tools for this device will not be trivial either.

A couple of things must be added before the first minimal version will be available in AppStore. It's hard to indicate a release date because many unknowns are included in the timeplan, but we are positive that the release will not be in the far future (whatever this may mean  ;) )

This makes the powerful Japanese or Chinese learning tool even more addictive.

We are happy to announce that Stackz List Editor 7.0 Dictionary Editon has just been released.

List Editor Dictionary Edition
The Dictionary Edition of the List Editor includes the "standard dictionary functions", i.e. the dictionary functions that are available in our freeware version of KanjiBrowze, of course with the new graphical user interface of Stackz 7.0.

List Editor PRO
In the same way the free KanjiBrowze can be registered to unlock the advanced features, the Stackz List Editor Dictionary Edition can be registered to unlock the advanced features as well. If registered, it shows exactly the same dictionary user interface as the Dictionary Edition of the Stackz Flashcard Organizer.

Since the gain in functionality is exactly the same for both mentioned freeware programs, we decided to use the price and also the key format of KanjiBrowze PRO licenses to unlock the List Editor Dictionary Edition. This means that if you already own a license of KanjiBrowze PRO, it will work with the List Editor right away. And if you intend to register the List Editor, simply purchase a license of KanjiBrowze PRO and use it with the List Editor.

General Discussion / Stackz in the web
October 14, 2007, 09:38:25 PM
It's interesting to see how Stackz is mentioned in many places across the internet. I guess that many of the Stackz users recommending and discussing this tool in other forums are also reading this forum here, so this is the moment where I want to say thank you to everybody who let others know about their experiences with the Stackz learning system. Below are a few links, I'm sure there are others I have not found yet.

(link) I spent ages trying out PPC programs and the one I chose and still use every day is stackz.
(link) I could not learn ANYTHING without my Stackz flashcard application!
(link) I use Stackz on my PDA, and I love it! It is by far the best flashcard program out there that I?ve found, both on PPC and PC. I?ve actually been using Stackz for over 2 years now!
(link) Stackz is by far the best software to learn vocabulary on a PDA!
(link) Stackz - very good, by the way
(link) A Japanese learning reference recommending Stackz, and (link) Stackz wordlists for download
(link) Stackz was a definite match for me!
(link) I've also kinda fallen in love with stackz, which is another flashcard program, which offers some nice sorting and testing options...
(link) I?ve definitely been missing the presence of Stackz [on the mac] - one of the key-pieces...
(link) A program called "Stackz" is also good for creating and reviewing vocabulary introduced here
(link) I was very impressed with this Japanese learning application for the PC when I saw it a couple of years ago but have no intention spending a lot of time in front of a PC learning Japanese so am very pleased to see they now have a Pocket PC version.
(link) It's one of the best flashcard programs I've seen out there (I actually paid money for it, and bought a pocket PC to be able to use it on the road. I haven't used a paper flashcard in over 2 years)
(link) Brilliant program... I downloaded and purchased Stackz flashcard program last month after it was recommended in the JapanShop newsletter and I love it. Just from playing around with it while I'm working I've probably increased my verb and adjective knowledge by a 3rd.
(link) I have been using Pocket Stackz for some time now and really enjoy it because it`s 1. completely portable 2. enables you to add example sentences to words/expressions which greatly facilitates learning. I often use it while I`m commuting on the train.
(link) A long thread about Stackz (forum registration required)
-- And i found my new friend, Stackz Dictionary Edition... A wonderful program that has absolutely no limitations in its use. It does pretty much everything... Flash cards, dictionary etc etc... yeah i know tons of other programs do this but at least, this one allows you to monitor your actual work.
-- I've been using it for about a year and my retention has gone from probably 15% to 85%. (I'm making those numbers up, but before Stackz I could look at an old flashcard and not recognize it at all, and now I know most all of them.)
-- This program helps retention of vocabulary so much, it's crazy. I'm in the middle of course 2, and at this point, I let all of the course 1 words fall into severe need for refreshing, each time giving it a longer interval than the time before.
-- I've been using Stackz since some of the earliest versions in '02. Over the years I've used many other flashcard programs but eventually I went to this one exclusively (say 95%). I think the main reason is the unrestrictive design which allows for almost limitless personal custom uses, once you get the hang of what you can do with it. When you combine the main program with the dictionary utilities it puts so much study power and potential at your fingertips. The demo version does limit a lot of the cool things you can do, however.

And here, one of the few negative ones (yes that happens too from time to time ;D)
(link) Stackz -- Tried it. Supposed to have boxes. Data entry seemed like hell. Could not figure out how the quiz function worked. Gave up. Not free.

Stackz - New Feature Requests / Sound
July 03, 2007, 06:34:25 PM

1. Integrated audio file option as found in "b4uki" (before you know it), not the linked kind as in "V-train".
Please let me know what the difference is between the two (integrated vs linked), and how would this translate to Stackz?

At present "Stackz" is great. You can you make it "insanely great"?
Sure, we are working on it... :)

The ability to sort on multiple columns would be welcome (in the edit list for example), so i can sort the category's column then on language's column.

It would be nice if Stackz could remember all the file open at next startup and not only the last one.

In the edit this stack dialog window, is it possible to set the columns to automatically default to korean or english data entry? (ie: i want the first column to automatically default to korean input, and the second column to automatically default to English input so that i dont have to keep changing the microsoft IME panel from english inout to korean input. Its a very small issue, but would save a lot of time when entering in many words (often i enter in a word or sentence and realise that i forgot to change it to korean input mode, as all the words in one column should be the same language so it makes sense to have it default to one language for every row of that column).

The keyboard that is assigned to the language of the edited attribute is automatically activated when editing an attribute. You can do this keyboard assignment, along with the font definition, in the language definition dialog.

More info can be found in the "Languages" section of the manual:

1) Will there ever be a dictionary version of stackz for the korean language?

If you (or someone else  :)) points me to an available korean dictionary, I can think about it, at the moment I'm not aware of one.

Hi,
I downloaded the stackz 07 preview and after using it for a short time I have one suggestion. Please implement some form of keyboard shortcuts for lesson management into the main window. My main file I use to work from has many lessons all together in the one file. I use this file promarily on my PDA and perform maintenance using the PC version. I like to have the focus lesson for any one week at the top of the file so that i can access it quickly, but in order to move it to the top of the pile i have to continually right click and select 'move up'. If i decide to add a new blank lesson then i have to move it all the way from the bottom to the top which takes a minute or two of right clicking. It has been a frustrating issue of this great program now for quite a while.

thanks for this suggestion!
