In the current concept, each Stackz Language has exactly one font assigned. So if you want a specific font, you need to define a different language, e.g. "Kanji stroke order font". This will use the fonts correctly, although the stroke order font needs to be displayed quite big to be readable and currently all so you will have to play with the settings a bit.

General Discussion / Re: need german dictionary
« on: February 23, 2008, 07:48:23 AM »
There is a version in Jim Breens collection, but it seems to include Umlaut characters. The Stackz Dictionary uses the Japanese font for all text, so it will try to interpret the Umlaut as Japanese EUC which leads to garbage. Changing the dictionary will not be possible for me within the next few weeks.

Note that you can open the file in an Editor and automatically replace all to ae, to oe and to ue (distinction of upper and lowercase might be needed). Then it will work.

It can be found at Jim Breens nihongo ftp archive http://ftp.monash.edu.au/pub/nihongo.

Stackz - Bug Reports / Re: Inaccurate statistics?
« on: February 17, 2008, 06:03:04 PM »
Yes indeed the behavoir is as you said. It would be more logical to only display the statistics of the selected stacks only... this will be fixed in an upcoming release.

General Discussion / Re: must I pay for new Versions

New versions are always available free of charge.

We don't offer the possibility to change the PDA versions... the administrative overhead would be too big.

This may become a topic, but not in the immediate future.

It is not advertised as such, but the RepeatAdvisor ColorMode is exactly what others now call spaced repetition!

You need Mobile Device Center instead of ActiveSync with Vista... then the installation is the same.

General Discussion / Re: How to set up Chinese-English dictionary?
« on: December 18, 2007, 08:30:01 AM »
Here is the help file of Stackz 2006: http://www.stackz.com/KooHelp/Stackz/Stackz.chm

You can find instructions in "Setup - Configure Dictionaries".

Stackz Flashcard Organizer for PC / Re: Updating the dictionary files
« on: December 18, 2007, 08:26:19 AM »
Yes EUC is for Japanese only indeed. Chinese dictionaries use GB2312 or Big5. Clicking the "download dictionary file" button in the dictionary configuration dialog opens the webpage <http://www.stackz.com/links.htm>, which contains links to Chinese dictionaries (traditional and simplified).

Simply add the file of your choice with the "add" button and choose the appropriate stackz language in the dictionary configuration dialog.

Please note that only the dictionary files that match the current Stackz language are selectable in the dictionary tool. You can set the Stackz language with the "Options" menu. Activating (i.e. clicking on) a Stackz document selects the language of that file (can be set in the file options).

At the moment Stackz uses the EUC formatted dictionaries only, other formats will not work.

PocketStackz - New Feature Requests / Re: Flagging words
« on: December 14, 2007, 05:03:21 PM »
Thanks for this suggestion, we agree that this would make sense.

Flagging could be used also for excluding individual words from the review process, a given state could be considered by the new retention manager.

As a workaround, you can easily enter a word in the comment (e.g. "FLAG" or "XX") and later on search for this word to find the flagged words.

Stackz - Bug Reports / Re: Bug in test view
« on: December 02, 2007, 08:28:15 PM »
Strange, especially that only a part of the characters was involved.
Please send me a file with the said problem to info at stackz dot com so I can investigate it.

Stackz - New Feature Requests / Re: Per Learning Test Stats
« on: October 17, 2007, 05:52:22 AM »
Yes, you are right - the stats are not per type (Skill). The reason for that is that it would be confusing if the cards are moved around the levels when the Skill is changed. It's one of the "simplicity versus functionality" tradeoff decisions. If you follow this route, you would also want to have comparison between Skills (i.e. what Skill has not yet been used for a certain card etc). In our opinion this goes in the wrong direction and distracts a bit from the real issue, which is learning a language in a fun and easy way. Please note that you can copy the file for keeping track of a different Skill if you don't want to lose the old statistics before resetting the content. Would that be an option in your case?

PocketStackz / Re: Learn Mode

Thanks for your comments! It's very valuable to hear the experiences of long term users.

1) Replacing: How about an option in the style of

[ x ] Local stack: automatically replace removed entries

The current functionality is checked, and your preference would be to uncheck it. Then you will have to press the down button after removing an element in order to keep the same number of entries in the local stack. We'll think about this option, even though options are increasing the complexity.

2) It seems that the focus is put somehow on the list with the numbers from time to time... the buttons always manipulate the controls with the focus. If you put the focus back on the arrow buttons, it will be OK. This is not random - are you sure that you did not remove the focus from the buttons?

3) This active number can be helpful when you start with really hard words. Also, the number is not constant over time... Please also note that thanks to this list you always know how many elements are in your "hand" for review, without this list you would not intuitively feel it (a number displayed somewhere has a completely different effect). We could add another option to hide this list...? aaaargh another option... well, maybe?
