I tried it with the files you sent to me with Stackz 2006, and everything was fine, also when using the start collecting next lot feature.

The only cause of the problem I can imagine is your version of Excel, I have 2003 and German. There are many conversions going on when the clipboard has to handle asian text, and this tends to be different with OS and application versions. Still -  the next lot feature uses the same functoins as manual copy/paste, which work fine on your system...

Workaround possibilities:
  • In the XP regional and language settings, extended tab, set the language to "Chinese" for programs that do not handle Unicode natively. This will probably force the correct encoding during the import process.
  • Try a different source than your version of Excel. Export the list from Excel (comma separated file works fine for the Import Wizard) and try Word or any other text editor.
  • Instead of the Import Wizard, the menu command "Wordlists - AutoImport lesson(s)..." can be used. With this command, several files can be selected and added to the current file with one command (automatically named "Lesson 1", "Lesson 2", ..., limited to 200 files). There you need individual files though, producing them may (or may not :-) be easier than manual copy/paste to the Import Wizard.
  • Use the Import Wizard without the "next lot" function. This involves a lot of annoying clicking, but it should work as you said.
  • Import the entire file, and split the content within Stackz. There is little support for that at the moment (edit stack content, cut, close edit window, create new lesson, paste), but it works. To avoid going insane, do it little by little, i.e. split a new lesson only if you are going to use it.
  • Live with the huge list for now and wait (a few months...) for the improved list content management features which will assist the splitting. In the meantime, use the "defined order" color mode to avoid being exposed to characters at random from the huge list.

Hope this is helpful, else I'll have to create a debug version to run on your system to find the problem.

Furthermore, is "Import and restart" supposed to clear the next edit window? I think I read that somewhere, however the entries from my last import cycle remain.
I've had other bugs when using the Import wizard with previous versions of Stackz.
Yes the previous entries must disappear. There are problems on your installation that I can't explain... I guess you have tried reinstalling Stackz. Do you have the possibility to try a different computer?

The Stackz Wordlists / Upload of .szm files enabled

I changed the settings of this board, now files with the extensions 'szm' can be uploaded as attachement. Use the 'Additional Options' below the Message entry field.

Wow, that sounds like a huge collection! I'm sure this would be interesting for many other users as well.

Of course we are interested in hosting this file in our archive. It would definitely get a special place in our list! I just enabled the upload permission for .szm files in this forum, please feel free to upload the files in this forum.

Stackz - New Feature Requests / Flags for entries
« on: June 10, 2006, 01:19:36 PM »
Improving the list content management is among the next planned improvements. Note that deleting an entry may cause problems like unwanted data loss...

We go more into the direction of adding flags to the entries which can be set during testing or learning: flag for printing... flag for moving/copying to another list... flag for further discussion with the teacher... and also the flag for removal, or a flag to exclude the entry from the test or learn activities. The list content management tool will do the wished actions with the flagged cards.

This is in the design phase, the challange is to add functionality without making it more complicated!

Thanks for reporting the problem!

Is the display correct in the first run of the Wizard, i.e. does the problem only occur with the "start collecting next lot" feature?

Please make sure that the language is set correctly for the corresponding attributes.

Please send me ( a sample of the words you try to import so I can duplicate the error if it persists.

Thanks for your report! The issues will be corrected in the next release.

General Discussion / Re: Do you still use paper flashcards?
« on: June 06, 2006, 09:59:53 PM »
There is no double sided print support at the moment in Stackz. This feature might be added at some point in time, but it has hardly ever been requested so it's very low priority.

The "print as flashcards" function has still its sense even the single sided way it is today; for exactly the purpose that you mentioned - you can print out the words that have been accumulated on the left side of a Stackz document as cards to carry them with you, arrange them on the desk, sort out the easy ones etc... things you can't do with a printed list. Really learning using the printed cards involves covering them partly, which is not ideal of course, but possible.

OK, I arranged to reproduce it. It's not related to the Japanese settings at all... it will take some time until I find the time to dig into it correctly however.

Concerning the language change, you are right, an update is missing there indeed... thanks for mentioning!

I just checked out your file - it worked fine on my PC, I can't duplicate the problem...

You specified some font names written in Japanese - are you using a Japanese version of Windows? This would explain the difference  :o

And I assume you are using Stackz 2006, the latest version?

Note - you should not be required to reopen files after a font change! In fact you can change the font even from within an open test or learn dialog without closing it: One of the toolbar icons takes you to the file options dialog, in its first tab ("Entries") you can change the language settings of the attributes, and thereby also the font of that language.

It looks like an update trigger is missed on your system, resulting in the two issues you are describing (missed resizing and missed font update).

Thanks for letting us know this issue!

This might be related to the font you are using. Sometimes the calculations for the width requirements are not precise... I tried to make sure that it works with all fonts, but well...

If you use the default font configuration (MSGotic or MSMincho, 12, regular), it should work correctly. What font/size are you using? And could you please send me a sample file which shows the problem? This will help me to reproduce and probably fix it.

Stackz - Solved Issues / Re: Find duplicates acting strange
« on: May 14, 2006, 08:47:34 PM »
If I am correct, then your post can be resumed like this:
Duplicate entries are only detected correctly after manually sorting the entries according the first column.

I checked it, and it seems that you are right. On slow computers the detection of duplicates is time consuming, especially with long lists - that's why the algorithm is only supposed to run if really needed. Of course it should run when the dialog is opened...

I'll fix that soon, in the meantime simply use the workaround as indicated above.

Thanks for posting!

wow, THAT's interesting!!!  :o

I must admit that I have not tried it with the lesson TITLE before, I assumed that you are referring to the attribute texts, which seem to be OK.

The Windows control of the lesson title thinks that you want to underline the character following the '&' to mark it as keyboard accelerator... keyboard accelerator underlines are inserted in this way in Windows. I will remove this undesired conversion behavior in the next release.

Thanks for pointing it out!

Thanks for reporting the bug. However, I am unable to reproduce it, if I enter a '&' it stays like that in the test dialog...

What Stackz version are you using? And could you please send me a sample file where the said issue appears so I can investigate it further?

You are right - there is a bug indeed! Thanks for reporting, it will be corrected soon!

Please note the radio buttons in the last step of the List Import Wizard that allow to send the new entries to a specific place:

  • Create new document
  • Add to new lesson
  • Add to selected lesson

You can use the first option to create a new document and add the items directly to it, without empty default lesson being inserted. Note that this option is pre-selected if the wizard is used without open document in the background. Using this mechanism is easier than manually removing the first empty lesson before or after importing the entries but I will of course fix the crash.

General Discussion / Re: How do you learn best?
« on: May 06, 2006, 10:37:32 AM »
There is still an unanswered question:

  • what is the difference between the Stackz classic system and the Leitner flashcard system?

The Leitner system has its emphasis on structuring the process of learning new words - it tries to optimize the insertion of a new word to the human brain.

The Leitner system assumes that cards must be declared as known consecutively several times in a row to reach the "known" state. Cards start on the left and progress to the right side, cards declared as unknown are sent to the first box again from where the process restarts.

The Stackz classic system has its emphasis on representing the current proficiency state - it tries to separate the "hard" from the "easy" ones, with the assumption that this classification must be constantly refreshed to be valid.

The Stackz classic mode is based on the assumption that cards are hardly ever completely mastered, but need to be refreshed from time to time. In this mode, it is expected that a short refreshing action is enough to bring a once well known card back to a full known state. Therefore the "declare as unknown" action demotes the card one step to the left, the next "declare as known" action can move it right back to the rightmost position.

Generally speaking, the Leitner system may be better to learn new words in an intensive course due to the emphasis on flawlessly mastering the words and by punishing any mistake quite hard, which requires a high effort. On the other hand, the more loose Stackz classic system may be better after the course when less time is invested, but the proficiency state of the words (that are no longer systematically used in a course) shall still be observed.

After all, it's also a matter of personal preference what works better for you.
