Tricky, tricky!

In all my attempts of exporting/copying cell content with Excel Linefeeds (inserted with Alt+Tab), the linefeed was lost and the lines were wrapped in quotes (like this: "line1line2"). Then Stackz has of course no chance of finding the linefeed when importing this text.

All I found was the following workaround:

1) replace the Excel linefeeds with a special character or sequence that is not apparing anywhere else in this wordlist (say, <LF>). You can do this by searching and automatically replacing all the Excel Linefeeds: enter Alt+0010 on the numeric key-block to specify the Excel-Linefeeds in the search part of the search/replace dialog (you won't see anything but it works), and "<LF>" in the replace part.

2) export the file in the CSV format (file save - as). This will insert ';' between the columns, and the Excel-Linefeed is included as your <LF>. To force the termination of your last column with a CSV character in the generated file (instead of the linefeed that is used in the last column), add another column with some dummy text that you will ignore later on, e.g. "END".

3) Open the exported CSV file in a text editor and replace all <LF> sequences with a real linefeed. Some text editors will allow you using the linefeed character when finding/replacing text, in others you might have to write a macro, or maybe you can do it by hand if there are not too many linefeeds.

4) Now you have a source list that is well suited for importing with the list import wizard of Stackz - simply use the CSV character as token-end-marker in the import wizard second step. Ignore the added last dummy column ("END").

I hope this was clear... and yes, it is quite complicated -  because I did not find a way to copy/export some text from Excel that includes Excel-Linefeeds in a convenient way. If there is such a possibility, please let me know and I'll update this description.

You can use Ctrl+Return to insert a linefeed.

General Discussion / Re: iPhone development status

Thank you for your encouragement, it's very motivating to continue this long work like that.
Money will not speed things up, the limiting factor is time for development.

But nevertheless we are progressing quite well, a first useful beta version will be available "soon". There will be a beta test phase for interested people advertised on our site. If you want to be sure to be among the first beta testers, please leave your message directly here in this thread or send me an email.

Thank you all for your interest in our products!

We will come out as soon as possible with a minimal version that will be completed step by step thereafter, but it is definitely too early at the moment. Please understand that we can't give a release date at the moment, the thing is not very well plannable due to limited available time, and the potential of unforeseen problems. We estimate it should be a matter of a few months - maybe two, maybe four... but please don't take this as a promise!

Stackz - New Feature Requests / Re: Stackz for Android
« on: January 27, 2010, 08:11:27 AM »
We are currently observing the Android platform, and there might be a Stackz version, some day in the future.
But please don't expect this soon, we are currently working on the iPhone version.

This is just a short status about the "Stackz for iPhone" development.

Development progress is quite slow due to lack of time, but we are more and more convinced that iStackz will be great!

At the moment, we can copy Stackz files from the mac to the iPhone and view the content there - in fact copying the files was quite a challenge with the iPhone platform! Adding the real Stackz features will be less tricky from a technical point of view, but finding the right balance of useable tools for this device will not be trivial either.

A couple of things must be added before the first minimal version will be available in AppStore. It's hard to indicate a release date because many unknowns are included in the timeplan, but we are positive that the release will not be in the far future (whatever this may mean  ;) )

The Stackz Wordlists / Re: Uploading files (study lists)?

This has nothing to do with your list!
Adding the lists takes some time, and I did not find a moment to do it. I hope to do it soon!

I don't understand why you need to buy "a new license" - if you had an old old license, it should still work! Remember that our licenses won't expire, they are valid for all future versions of Stackz!

If you lost your license during the crash, send us a mail where you identify yourself and we'll send you your original license key again.

If you don't have a license, the files are locked after some time. This is to remember that using Stackz without license is only permitted for the trial phase, not for a longer time. (Nevertheless, you can unlock the files even without license - but it will reset the learning statistics in your file...) So if you have a license, simply enter the license code and they will become unlocked.

The mail issue is probably not related to Stackz, but to your operating system and its settings...

Stackz Flashcard Organizer for PC / Re: Match dialog reporting a false-miss
« on: November 24, 2009, 10:54:55 AM »
Please note that the Match Dialog only accepts successful matches if all the entries are selected for the first time - otherwise one could try and error until a lucky match occurs. Maybe that clears the situation, or are you referring to a different issue?

Stackz - Bug Reports / Re: Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Error
« on: November 24, 2009, 10:51:33 AM »
I'm afraid I have no idea how to solve the problem, the features you mentioned work fine on the systems I have tried...

Maybe there is an issue on your PC - have you installed any other software that altered the system dlls? You can try uninstalling and re-installing Stackz, maybe this cures the problem.

Do you have any chance to test it on a different PC?

PalmStackz / Re: handheld devices supporting palm stacks?
« on: September 10, 2009, 08:20:45 AM »
Please note that PocketStackz (details are here) runs on devices with Windows Mobile (Pocket PCs PDAs / smartphones), and PalmStackz (details are here)runs on devices which Palm OS.

As a software provider we generally do not recommend devices. You can find more information by googling for "Windows Mobile Devices", "Windows Mobile Smartphones", or "Palm Devices", etc. or by visiting your local electronics shop. You might also find a inexpensive used model on ebay.

When using the Learn command and/or F3 and/or double-clic on a stakz, the program freezes totally and nothing can be done anymore (I have to "kill" the program and relaunch it).

I can confirm that there is a problem in this area. I will analyze the problem and come with a solution soon.

Workaround: Do not repeat the dialog open action (any of menu, F3, or doubleclick) when the dialog does not appear immediately.

The Stackz Wordlists / Re: Edit Attributes

The problem is that I have no way of sorting the remaining unmemorized vocabulary for priority without altering the current file (which is broken into lessons and reviewed periodically )beyond what I would prefer.

For the time being I can use your suggestion above to artificially move the unmemorized but un-useful words up to level 5 and where they can be more easily ignored.

You are right, there is no concept in Stackz at the moment of classifying the entries according to "relevance" or "importance". Every entry is considered as of equal relevance.

Your idea certainly will work fine, but only with the ColorMode "RepeatAdvisor", with difficulty estimation set to "promotion level". In this setting, the repetition interval depends on the card's refresh date and the promotion level (longer for high promotion levels, see Repeat Advisor ColorMode detail settings). The other ColorModes are based on the card refresh date and/or past success/failure counts, which does not depend on the promotion level.

Background: The ColorMode visualizes the card's "good or bad" state with a color, and the study tools process the selected cards in the "bad to good" order. The ColorMode "RefreshDate" simply uses the last positive test for classification (the oldest card is processed first). The RepeatAdvisor extends the RefreshDate algorithm by highlighting (and processing first) the cards that are "overdue", i.e. "current difficulty estimation is worse than the threshold (for this level)". This corresponds to the well known "spaced repetition" algorithm.

The question is just whether you want to have the "not so important" words in your list in the first place. You could also move those cards to different lessons (e.g. "Lesson 1 optional", or "all optional words") or even to a special file. But then you would have to decide yourself when you want to study those words, as opposoed to the algorithm telling you to look at a less relevant word (while you are studying relevant words).

Future considerations in the Stackz system go in the direction of adding "flags" for the entries. A parameter "relevance" could be an extended flag (or parameter). Such developments have low priority at the moment, and we also try to avoid overloading the system.

The Stackz Wordlists / Re: Edit Attributes
« on: August 24, 2009, 01:27:24 PM »
The "test state" represents the statistics of your test activities, i.e. how many times the word was declared as known or unknown. You can't alter these values, but you can reset them.

The "level" corresponds to the column where the card is located. You can move the cards manually to a different level, e.g. using the cut and paste functionality. Or, in the stack edit dialog, use the context menu "maintenance/move to stack...".

To isolate some words, the recommended practice is to group them into a lesson. Cards can be moved from one lesson to another in the same way it can be moved from one level to another (cut/paste).

In what way would you like to isolate cards? If it is according to the "type of word", then it is best to split the cards into individual lessons representing the required types. If it is according the current learning state, then using the accumulated "test state" (without modifiying) in combination with the appropriate "ColorMode" would be the best solution.

Please note that at the moment there are no "tags" that can be attached to the cards and then be used for isolating matching cards.
