: stackz crashes when I mark the last card in a stack
: oumaike August 12, 2008, 08:50:14 AM
I'm using Stackz Version 7.0 (Dictionary Edition) on a Windows Vista SP1 notebook. I used the List Import Wizard multiple times to import around 2000 cards in 50 lessons. Everytime at the end of a test on a stack, when I mark the last card as either known or unknown Vista pops up a dialog saying "Stackz Flashcard Organizer has stopped working. Windows can check online for a solution to the problem, [option 1] Check online for a solution and close the program, [option 2] Close the program." Stackz closes when I chose either of the options.

Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: APPCRASH
Application name: stackz.exe
application version: 2.2.0.0
application timestamp: 47e598a6
exception code: c0000005
exception offset: 0011e34c
os version: 6.0.6001.2.1.0.256.6
locale id: 1033
additional information 1: 4540

I rebooted and retried. Same problem.

I uninstalled Stackz, rebooted, reinstalled Stackz, and retried. Same problem.

I tried using the "New Practical Chinese Reader 1 - Vocab.szm" file from your website. Same problem.

I would appreciate any help in solving this problem since it's really annoying but, worse, when Stackz crashes it forgets the the new state of the cards I marked in that session.  The current workaround is to try to pay attention and never mark the last card.

I discovered today that I have the same problem when running Stackz Version 7.0 (Dictionary Edition) on a Windows Vista SP1 VMware Fusion 1.1.3 virtual machine  on an Apple Macbook running OS X 10.5.4. I'm using "Chinese Intermediate Course.szm" downloaded from your website.

These are two very different hardware setups and I have Stackz crashing 100% of the time on both while doing a simple everyday operation.

I tried modifying the properties of stackz.exe to run this program in compatibility mode for "Windows XP (Service Pack 2)". This fixed the problem in the Macbook's virtual machine. But the problem still occurs 100% of the time on my actual Windows Vista notebook. I used the same "Chinese Intermediate Course.szm" on both machines.

There was one difference in the configurations: the virtual machine's copy of Stackz was not registered, the real notebook's copy of Stackz was registered.

So, to eliminate this difference, I registered the virtual machines's copy of Stackz. And now it also fails 100% of the time when I mark the last card in a stack.

Does anyone have a registered copy of Stackz working on Windows Vista?  If so, do you have any suggestions for remedying my problem?  My two hardware configurations are vastly different and this would seem to indicate that there is a general problem in the Stackz software running on Vista.

I tried modifying the properties of stackz.exe to run this program in compatibility mode with privilege level set to "Run this program as an administrator".   Marking the last card in deck did *not* cause Stackz to crash.  But after closing and restarting Stackz it returned to crashing when I mark the last card in deck. 100% reproducible.

Anybody out there?

thanks for reporting, I'll have to look into this when I have a moment.

This is the only starting point for my investigation. Please let me know under what name and when you regsitered, so I can try to reproduce your situation.

No reaction?

Sorry for not getting back. I wasn't using Stackz or checking the forum.  Ready to try again. Now using Stackz 7.1 RC2 and after casual use it doesn't show the problem I described above. Yes, it does now work on Vista for me. Same PC. No changes to hardware or software, just the Stackz 7.1 RC2.
